The world’s first smartphone by Ubuntu the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Phone goes on sale Monday February 9 in Europe, after years of delays and false starts followed by broken promises.
The phone will have a QHD display of 4.5 inches, a MediaTek Cortex quad-core A7 processor, with 1.37 GHz and RAM of 1GB. It also will feature a front camera with 5 megapixel and a rear camera with 8-megapixel.
Ubuntu Phone will likely shake up how the smartphone users interact with their own phones and the apps that are pre-installed.
The phone will be on sale exclusively in Europe for $194 starting February 9.
Sales of the first Ubuntu Phone will go quick as there is only a limited number of the BQ Aquaris E4.5 devices available Monday. Rodrigo del Prado the deputy director general from BQ said that more flash sales will take place like Monday’s event and then there will be more availability across most of Europe over the next three to four weeks.
Many of the networks throughout Europe such as Portugal Telecom, giffgaff and amena.com will offer bundles with the new Ubuntu phone.
A spokesperson for Canonical the company that is behind Ubuntu Phone said that launching any new product is in itself a journey and this is just the very first step and for now the company will focus on users bored with Android and iOS instead of fighting for space on shelves amongst the brands that are much more known.
Starting on Monday the clock will start ticking to see if the direction the company took using flash sales will payoff for them and if the Ubuntu Phone receives the attention of the Android and iOS users that have become disgruntled.
